Garden beside the sea, the Solent, New Forest

A few details

A few years after helping to obtain planning permission for this house on the edge of the Solent, we have returned to expand the gardens, extend the wildlife pond and improve the woodland shelterbelt that protects the site from the wind. Our clients’ excellent idea to have a sunken garden between the house and the shore has been made, with stunning views along the coast, some shelter from an almost relentless breeze for sitting out and foreground interest in views from the house to the yachts passing on the Solent. Chosen materials harmonise with the colour and texture of the house, the foreshore and the distant Isle of Wight. Selected plants with complimentary foliage tones, tolerant of the harsh growing conditions, will creep across the walls and stone shingle beds seeking protection. Additional ‘wave’ beds have been designed to link the sunken garden to the boathouse, with ribbons of shingle and maritime plants mirroring the patterns on the beach. The wildlife pond is extended with boardwalk links proposed as a means of connecting a distant woodland area with the main part of the gardens.
